I started Oceankind after attempting to row 2,400 miles across the Pacific to raise awareness of plastic pollution. The beauty industry is one of the leading plastic polluters, from packaging to ingredients. At Oceankind, we're on a mission to help clean up our oceans. I went from being surrounded by sea to being surrounded by shelves of plastic, and knew I needed to make a change.

Gift sets are a lovely way to show someone you care. But a lot of beauty gifts on the high street still come with a hidden cost to the ocean.

The packaging problem. The beauty industry produces around 120 billion units of packaging every year, and most of it is plastic. Gift sets often add more: plastic bottles, moulded plastic trays, and boxes wrapped in film or with plastic windows. Packaging made from mixed materials is especially hard to recycle, so much of it ends up in landfill, or in the sea.

What's inside matters too. Many everyday products contain synthetic polymers, sometimes called liquid microplastics. They help with texture or shine, then wash down the drain and can stay in the environment for a very long time. The UK's microbead ban only covers solid plastic beads in rinse-off products, so these liquid polymers are still allowed.

Our gift set is different.

Glass and aluminium: the jar and lid are endlessly recyclable.

Card, not plastic: the kraft gift box and insert are card, with no plastic tray and no shrink-wrap.

A cloth that lasts: 100% organic cotton muslin, made to be washed and used again and again instead of disposable wipes.

Nothing hidden in the jar: a simple balm of plant oils, shea butter, marine algae extract and lavender, with no microplastics or silicones.

We're not perfect, and we'll always tell you where we're still growing. But we believe a gift can be beautiful and kind to the ocean at the same time.

Why I love this

I love giving this set as much as I love using it. There's something special about a gift that feels lovely before you've even opened it: the thick kraft box, the velvety soft sleeve with its watercolour seaweed, and the little sprig of lavender on the front.

Then you lift the lid. The jar sits snugly in its own card nest, and the muslin cloth is rolled up beside it with its own lavender band. There's no plastic tray to wrestle with and no shrink-wrap to peel off, just something calm and pretty to open.

I wanted the person receiving it to feel looked after from the very first moment, and I hope they'll keep coming back to it every evening long after the box has been recycled - their new favourite way to feel pampered.

For external use only. Not for use in or around the eye area, on broken skin or on mucous membranes. If irritation occurs, stop using it. If the product comes into contact with your eyes, rinse straight away with plenty of clean, lukewarm water. If irritation continues, please seek medical advice.

Coconut oil can clog pores for some people, so if your skin is prone to breakouts, start with two or three evenings a week. If you're sensitive to fragrance, patch-test on your inner arm for 48 hours first.

FAQs
Can I send it straight to someone as a gift?
Of course, just add their address as the shipping address at checkout. We never include a receipt or price in gift orders. We can include a message too at no extra charge, simply add a note to the order on the checkout page.

Will the cloth be the colour in the photo?
The muslin is 100% organic cotton, and the colour may vary from batch to batch. Each one is just as soft.

How long will the cleanser last?
You'll find a best-before date on the base of the jar. For the loveliest scent and texture, we'd suggest using it within 6 months of opening.

Can it be used to remove eye make-up?
No, the cleanser shouldn't be used in or around the eye area. For mascara and eyeliner, use a gentle remover made for the eye area first, then use the balm on the rest of the face.

Do they need a second cleanse?
It depends what they like. The balm leaves a light moisturising layer, which many people love, as it means they can often skip the moisturiser. Others prefer to follow with a gentle water-based cleanser for a fresher finish.

Can I buy refills?
Yes, the cleanser is available on its own, as either the mini or full size versions.

When will it arrive?
We're currently accepting pre-orders which will be dispatched on 1st December 2026; allowing plenty of time for postage ahead of Christmas.

How to use

The ritual
1. Warm. Scoop a fingertip of balm and warm it between your fingers until it melts.

2. Massage. Smooth it over dry skin, avoiding the eye area. Take a minute and enjoy it.

3. Press. Run the muslin cloth under warm water, wring it out and hold it over your face. Breathe in the lavender.

4. Wipe. Gently wipe the balm away, rinse the cloth and repeat until your skin feels clean.

Caring for your cloth: rinse it after each use and hang it up to dry. Wash it in the regular wash at 40°C.
